Sales, lies and nothing on videotape

I’d be telling a Pinocchio-sized porky if I told you this year had been my best yet.

·        In February, my biggest retainer client was bought out and sold into small pieces. Almost everyone I worked with at the company lost their job. It was sh*t and sad.

·        A couple of the agencies I work with have struggled as their clients have slashed their marketing budgets. One owner disbanded altogether and took an (awesome) in-house employed role.

·        I’ve scrolled through so many posts claiming ‘In today’s climate, synergies with AI are providing market-leading solutions’ that I’ve been close to tapping my eyeballs with a tuning fork to the beat of ‘F*ck You’ by Lily Allen.

But I’d also be doing myself, and everyone else wading through this sludge, a disservice if I didn’t say, honestly, some stuff has gone really bloomin’ well.

·        I’ve shared loads of stories that feel really important (more this year than ever before, perhaps). That’s stuff like
o  case studies for a university funding research into the impact of natural disasters on disabled communities in Indonesia
o  website copy for a healthcare organisation working with people who’ve suffered life-changing accidents and need 24/7 care
o  articles and reports for a charity raising awareness of social, economic and cultural barriers young people face when taking part in sports.

·        There’s been a bit of a surge in people wanting copywriting training. I’ve done this for years and I love it, and my 1-2-1 bookings have had a huge boost. (Shameless plug alert.)

·        I was lead copywriter on a project that was top-three shortlisted for a national award at The Savoy, and I wrote the copy for a luxury hotel since named in the Top Five Hotels in London. (Oh look, more shameless plugs, la-di-da).

Biggest of all? The clients I’ve gained and retained this year are some of my all-time FAVOURITES. The ones who say, “suggestions in the brief but feel free to discount them, I totally trust your judgement” and “of course we invited you, you’re one of the team” (legit quotes).

These are the good people, who value humans, pay fairly, and made being a copywriter in 2025 still (at least partially) joyful.

There’s your honest, balanced, and certainly unrequested 2025 copywriting review.

See you in January (when I’m fully-booked. Spots for YOU and YOUR WORDS from February.)

I’m Laura Barritt, copywriter still cracking on with woes AND wins this year. I’ll be back with a bang in 2026, but I’m off to be Santa, Mrs Clause and all the bloomin’ elves for the next few weeks. Creativity and multitasking? Completed it, mate.
